![]() ![]() In 2016, the Departments of Education and Justice issued a letter to schools receiving federal funding that interpreted Title IX protection to apply to gender identity and transgender students, advising schools to use a student's preferred name and pronouns and to allow use of bathrooms and locker rooms of the student's gender identity. President Barack Obama issued an executive order prohibiting discrimination against transgender people in employment by the federal government and its contractors. The Equality Act, if passed, would prohibit discrimination on the basis of gender identity in employment housing public accommodations education federally funded programs credit and jury service. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Court held that Title VII protections against sex discrimination in employment extend to transgender employees. The Supreme Court of the United States has only once ruled directly on transgender rights, in 2020 in the case of R.G. Many of these bills became law, specifically in Republican-led states, with left-leaning states vetoing said bills. In 2023, over 490 anti-LGBTQ bills have been introduced as of mid-June. ![]() In 2022, over 300 anti-LGBTQ bills were introduced, of which at least 171 were anti-transgender. In 2021, there were 191 such bills, 80 percent of which specifically sought to restrict the rights of transgender people. This legislative activity dropped while Trump was in office, then rose again. In 2016, over 250 such bills were introduced. ![]() In 2014, 85 anti-LGBTQ bills were introduced. There is a coordinated national campaign by conservative/ right-wing politicians and organizations to target transgender rights. In the United States, the rights of transgender people vary considerably by jurisdiction. ![]()
